Most frequently used material is aluminum alloy A356.1, heat treated to either T51 or T6 condition.
A356 - High purity, low iron, all purpose. Dimension control and surface finish are comparable to diecasting and investment. High metallurgical integrity. (The investment casting process often has problems in high strength applications or castings where thick and thin sections are integrally and variously combined. In many applications, it has been replaced by the Plaster Casting process.) The plaster casting process gives a good surface finish and is able to provide more effective chilling, gating, and risering, and hence better control of metallurgical properties. Plaster mold castings are like diecast parts such that prototype work can be designed as diecastings. |
